Congratulations to Johnson Senior High School 11th grader Nalee Vang for receiving honorable mention at the State History Day Competition held at the University of Minnesota on Sunday April 29. Nalee received this recognition for her “Secret War” website in the Senior Individual Website portion of the competition. Please see the website Nalee created: http://43319170.nhd.weebly.com 

 

Congratulations to Johnson High School senior Jake Heffernan for receiving the Hull Foundation Scholarship. The Orson Hull family established this fund for Johnson and Harding High School graduates in the 1960s in appreciation for the East Side of St. Paul. The grant is a full-tuition scholarship.

 

Congratulations to Johnson High School senior Melissa Vang for being named a Gates Millennium Scholar. The Gates Millennium Scholarship is a full ride scholarship awarded for academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. The scholarship aims to provide support to students from their undergraduate degree through a doctoral program.
 
Congratulations to Science teacher Colin Denis who was recently selected to participate in the 2012 Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program in Physics at the University of Minnesota. This program will provide 6 weeks of hands-on research experience in cutting-edge physics, seminars exploring other physics research at Minnesota, and seminars about teaching with the Physics Education Research group. 
 
 

Congratulations to Bao Yang, Jordan Lee, Thomas Vennemann, Choua Vang, Xee Her, Shayla Thacker and Melissa Vang for being named Dell Scholars.  They will each receive a $20,000 scholarship along with a Dell computer and printer.  Johnson High School students received 7 of the 18 total scholarships given to students in the state of Minnesota.

Congratulations to Johnson High School students Soma Abdullah, Armani Black, Tiana Daniels, Nyle Enright, Gage Grace, Jordan Lee, Denise Quintanilla, Shayla Thacker, Gaonou Vang, Thomas Vennemann, and Malcolm Wade for being named Wallin Education Partners Scholars.   Johnson High School received 11 of the 36 scholarships given in the Saint Paul Public Schools.
 
 
                
Congratulations to Marcus Marshall and Quashingm Smith-Pugh, JHS Basketball Players, for being named to the All State Team and All Tournament Team for 3A.
 

Congratulations to Jake Heffernan, JHS Diver, for taking 1st in St. Paul City Conference for a second year in a row, and 5th in the sectional meet.
 
 
 
Congratulations to Jay Dickman, Senior JHS Hockey Player, named to the 2012 St. Paul Pioneer Press All State Team. Also, to seniors Jake Gallivan, Bryan Standly, and Mark Terry for Honorable Mentions. Jay was also named to the Third All Metro Team by the Star Tribune. Thanks for a great season to the entire JHS Hockey Team.
 
 


Congratulations to the JHS Wrestler Keng Xiong for capturing bronze in the 2012 MN State Wrestling Tournament! Keng is a four time all conference member and a 3 time state entrant. He finished this season with a record of 42-4!

 
 
Twin Cities Regional Science Fair Winner
Congratulations to Tom Vennemann who won the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair (TCRSF). Tom is one of three students who will be attending the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) held on May 13-18, 2012 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Intel ISEF is the world's largest international pre-college science competition. This premier global science competition for students in grades 9–12 provides an annual forum for more than 1,500 high school students from 65 countries, regions, and territories to display their independent research.  The particle accelerator Tom created set him apart from the competition at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair, which was held at the University of Minnesota on February 24-25. A particle accelerator is a device that uses electromagnetic fields to propel charged particles to high speeds and to contain them in well-defined beams.

At the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair held at the University of Minnesota this past weekend Tom was also awarded the Naval Science Research Award from the U.S. Navy and the Mu Alpha Theta Award from the National High School and Two Year College Mathematics Honor Society.

Tom is also a member of the varsity Johnson hockey team.
 
 
Regional I-SWEEP Olympiad Awarded
Congratulations to Nyle Enright who won the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair (TCRSF)Among the awards, the winners received were the ISEF and ISWEEP and STATE awards which are the most coveted awards given out at the TCRSF. Nyle won the ISWEEP  International Sustainable World Energy Engineering Environment Project award and will go on to compete at the ISWEEP competition. Nyle will be participating in the national ISWEEP competition in Houston, Texas on May 2, 2012. Nyle also won the STATE award and will go on to compete at the STATE competition on March 18.
 
Choua Vang Recognized for Volunteer Service
Choua Vang, senior at Johnson Senior High School was recently honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award. The Prudential Spirit of the Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama presented this award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country. Choua is a great student and even a better person. It is nice that she was recognized for all of her hard work and commitment to our community!
 
PLTW MASTER TEACHER
Science teacher Eric Colchin was recently selected as a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Master Teacher in Biotechnical Engineering. The selection committee used classroom observations, student work, test scores, recommendations, lesson plans and a personal statement to make their selection. Eric is the only PLTW Master Teacher for Biotechnical Engineering in the state of Minnesota.
 
INTERNATIONALIZING GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION CONFERENCE
Kelly Swanson was selected among eight high school teachers in the United States to participate in the First Annual "Internationalizing Geography Education conference: A focus on India and South Asia". The conference will be held in Bangalore, India on March 11, 2012. Kelly was chosen among a field of high school and university professors to represent the United States in this conference, which brings together teachers from Pakistan, India and United States. The focus will be to develop and Advanced Placement Human Geography curriculum in the region to initiate AP Human Geography in South Asia. When you see Kelly please congratulate him on this wonderful accomplishment!

Parent Academy for 9th Grade Parents/Guardians
The Saint Paul Public School Parent Academy is a free seven-week program. The goal of the program is to bring schools, parents/guardians and the community together as equal partners in the education of our students. Parent Academy provides relevant information to parents so that parents can better support their child’s road to college. The program is taught in five languages: English, Hmong, Karen, Spanish and Somali. The facilitators of the program are language and ethnic specific.
