English Language Arts

Welcome to the Johnson High School English Department, which cultivates the acquisition of language arts skills by actively engaging students in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Students improve their skills in comprehending and analyzing the literature of the United States and the world.  All non-elective English classes meet the Minnesota Academic Standards in Language Arts.  Johnson students also have the opportunity to earn University of Minnesota credits at Johnson by taking the College in the Schools (CIS) Composition and Modern Literature classes. We also offer Advanced Placement Literature and Advanced Placement Language classes. Students are required to accumulate a minimum of four English credits per year.

Our Mirror:  Please check out this year's edition. We are very proud of it. The editors did fabulous work reflecting our school community! Here's a link. Staff and faculty are encouraged to submit any artisitic materials to The Mirror to be considered for publication: jhsmirror@gmail.com

The Johnson English Department is a big fan of Poetry Out Loud. Click on the link and check out some poems. The website is full of "gems." A good place to start is under the "Find Poems" tab in "Browse Collections."

A thought before you go:

“Young people, don’t be afraid. Be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourselves with a good education, then get out there and use that education to build a country worthy of your boundless promise.”  - Michelle Obama
