Plague, Pox, and Pestilence will introduce students to the effects of disease on the development of humanity. The course involves the examination of major medical challenges throughout civilization, the medical establishment's response, and the lasting effect of these crises. Epidemics will be viewed through an historical lens, and the science of medicine will be addressed with a special emphasis on the historical reasons for scientific advancements and innovations. The history of vaccines and controversies surrounding the act of vaccination will also be addressed. All diseases covered still exist in some form today, so students will be challenged to consider modern-day and future approaches to disease management, including the current SARS Covid-19 pandemic.
