When I was a sophomore in high school, I decided I wanted to be a high school English teacher. Over forty years later, I think back to that former me, look at the students in front of me and smile. I had no idea what adventures were in store for me, but my education took me literally around the world: Peace Corps volunteer in Mongolia, English and Theatre Arts teacher in Istanbul, Turkey. I try to let every one of my students know they should not underestimate the power and potential of their own futures.
I am the Advisor to The Mirror Editors and the coach of Poetry Out Loud. I take a lot of pride in the fact that Johnson is the only high school in Saint Paul that produces a magazine celebrating our students’ creative writing, poetry, and artwork. I take a lot of pride in seeing our Govies take on the challenge of memorizing and reciting poems for the Poetry Out Loud competition and more often than not going to the state final.
My wife teaches at Eastern Heights and both of our kids are SPPS graduates (Como and Central), so our belief in Saint Paul Public Schools is more than just talk. I want the best for my students and work to keep them at the center of all I do here.
In my spare time I like to play guitar, write, and read. If you are a writer or are interested in poetry, please stop by the Poetry Club Mondays after school in 1101 to learn more about all we have to offer.
