College Access

Johnson students are diverse in their life experience, perspectives, and hopes for the future. They are resilient learners who advocate for solutions to impact our ever-changing world. Johnson’s counseling department collaborate with students, families and school staff to develop positive student mindsets, to realize and achieve student academic goals, and to support students in the pursuit of post-secondary aspirations.

  • Academic- Johnson counselors hold individual meetings to discuss school success strategies, academic goal setting, course planning, opportunities to earn college credits, and credit recovery. Counselors also visit student classrooms to provide information about graduation requirements, how to interpret transcripts, social emotional supports and post-secondary planning.
  • Social Emotional- Individual counseling sessions: Counselors are available to students on a daily basis to navigate topics such as stress management, problem solving, relationships, self esteem, mental health,  student identity and change.
  • 9th Grade Transition Support- Johnson counselors visit every 9th grader in the classroom to deliver a Personal Learning Plan lesson and individual student meeting to identify student strengths, interests and goals for high school. In addition to course concentration in English 9, Math, Science and World History, all 9th grade students are enrolled in Freshmen Focus (or AVID 9) and Project Lead the Way: Engineering Essentials.
  • Referrals- Counselors connect with school social workers, Health Start Clinic, and community partners to provide additional student support when needed.

College and Career Readiness- Students use Xello to explore, research and record post-secondary plans. Counselors visit classrooms throughout the school year to educate students on the college application process and financial aid.Johnson counselors connect students with the College and Career Center and Work-Based Learning/Career Pathways program for internship and job opportunities, work-site and college visits, and financial planning for post-secondary education.

Licensed School Counselors: The counselors at Johnson Senior High School partner with students, families and staff to support student success. To learn more about your counselor, click on their name below.
