The Art Club is for students who have a passion for art. It is a safe place for students of all kinds to come and create with people who have a similar interest....they love art. Each meeting usually consists of an optional activity presented (with supplies provided) and time to create. Some students come to work on their own art, while others choose to participate in the activity for the day, or some simply come as a place to hang with "their people." ALL ARTISTS are welcome!

All students are welcome to participate in choir at Johnson! No experience required to join our Treble or Bass Choirs! We offer a variety of options for those looking to expand their musical knowledge, gain experience working with their voice, vocal technique, composition, and musical exploration. The choirs often perform at both school and community events around the Twin Cities. Choir is a strong community at Johnson, and we would love to have you come sing with us. "No matter where you're from, or where you're going, you belong here."

College Possible is a free college access and success program that provides 6+ years of guided 1:1 support to students. It starts in junior and senior year of high school, and supplies follow-up support throughout your entire college journey. At the high school level, we support students in identifying, researching, and applying to colleges. Throughout the year we host workshops and give insight on how to apply to financial aid, write college essays, adjust to college-life, and find scholarships tailored to students.

The Color Guard is a team that presents the colors (flags) for various events throughout the school year. These events may be school-sponsored (varsity games, graduation, etc.), government based (Asian Pacific Islander day at the Capitol, Workers Day, Veterans Events), or private/other organization based (Regions Hospital Veterans Day, various Memorial Day events, Nursing Homes, MN Civil War Society, World War 2 Roundtable, etc.). Students must be enrolled in Air Force JROTC to be part of the Color Guard club.

We will meet when plays are in production. We will act and perform the plays, if it is preferred we have many who work behind the scenes doing tech crew.

This club meets weekly to practice flying drones around, through, and between obstacles. The training culminates in various competitions with other drone teams. Students must be enrolled in Air Force JROTC to sign up for the Drone Team

We learn drumline music to perform at the basketball home games throughout the season. Students in drumline will play one of the four percussion instruments in the drumline - tenor drums, cymbals, snare drum, or bass drum.

Prerequisite: Students should have AT LEAST one year of experience on an instrument. To play tenor drums or snare drum, students need 2+ years of percussion playing experience in band.

***Students must be able to attend home basketball games to perform.

This is an amazing opportunity to help grow your leadership skills and build community within our school! Students are in charge of leading the Advisory activities and making people feel welcome in our school. The beautiful thing about this program is that it takes place during the school day, and anyone can lead, regardless of their personality or academic standing. You do not need an application, we accept anyone grades 10-12. All you need to do is inform an adult or fellow Govie leader that you are interested, and they can let Ms. Krois know to have you join the Johnson Govie leader Group page on Schoology. This page will have Advisory resources and give frequent updates about activities and events.

Govie Captain - To be a Govie Captain, you have to be enrolled in our Student Government or College in the Schools (CIS) Exploring the Teaching Profession class. This is typically for 11th-12th graders. The captains learn about leadership in the class and take the skills they learn to run their own advisory. They are the main lead, and have Govie leaders to support them. There is usually 1-2 Govie Captains per Advisory.
Govie Leader - To be a Govie leader, you simply have to want to join! You will be responsible for attending Monday meetings to learn about Advisory and helping lead activities Wednesday - Friday. There tends to be 2-5 Govie leaders per Advisory.

Do you want to learn more about the Hmong culture while obtaining opportunities in service and leadership? Consider joining Hmong Club! We organize big events like the Johnson Hmong New Year and provide students with lots of opportunities to build their soft skills by fulfilling volunteer hours and services. Through our community, our members can meet lifelong friends while also doing good for our school. We meet every Monday after school from 3:00-4:00 PM in the Hmong classroom, room 1218. We hope you join us.

In jazz band we play jazz, rock & roll, and various latin charts. This is an instrumental ensemble.

Prerequisite: At least one year in band on one of the following instruments - saxophone, trumpet, trombone, or bass guitar.

Drumset, Bass Guitar and Guitar students also welcome - however you should have multiple years' experience on these instruments and be proficient in reading sheet music AND chords. We don't read TAB in jazz band.

Students in honors band are required to take Morning Full Orchestra or Jazz Band as a part of their honors requirements. Ensemble is open to anyone who qualifies to play in Advanced/Honors Orchestra or Band.

Govie Leaders are JHS upperclassmen who run daily activities in advisory and bring student voice to the Johnson community. We envision a school where all students live by the value "What hurts my brother or sister hurts me." All students are welcome to become Govie Leaders during their junior or senior year.

The Johnson Mirror is a student edited art and literary magazine that reflects our school to the greater community.

The Mirror has been awarded certificates of Excellent by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) for the last 6 years in a row!

Are you a Junior? Are you creative? Do you want to help with Prom? The Junior Class Board helps to ensure Prom is a success. If this sounds like something you are interested in doing please contact one of the advisors in September to get more information about joining.

Karen Club offers students the opportunity to learn about Karen culture, including traditional dances such as the Don and bamboo dances. Members collaborate with the Hmong Club on events like the Hmong New Year. The club provides a platform for students at Johnsons to share and celebrate their cultural heritage. All students are welcome to join and participate.

In addition to dance, Karen Club members also explore traditional music, clothing, language, and cuisine, creating an immersive experience that goes beyond the classroom. The club meets regularly on Tuesday in room 2112. Guest speakers from the local Karen community often visit to share personal stories, deepening everyone's understanding of the culture's history and values.

By participating in community service projects and multicultural festivals, Karen Club members not only celebrate their own heritage but also foster cross-cultural connections with others at Johnsons. The club encourages leadership and teamwork, as students organize events, fundraisers, and cultural showcases throughout the year. Whether you are of Karen descent or simply interested in learning more about this vibrant culture, Karen Club offers a welcoming space to connect, learn, and grow together.

The JHS Choirs put on a school musical in the spring. Choir students are active in planning, rehearsing, and organizing components of musical theater as a vital part of their curriculum. Auditions take place in the fall. If you are interested, please contact Mrs. Lunda.

NHS is an organization that recognizes students who excel in academics, leadership, service and who demonstrate strong character. All eligible sophomores and juniors are invited to apply in April. JHS NHS recognizes academic achievement by publishing the JHS Honor Roll each quarter and sponsoring Student of the Month.

Poetry club meets on Mondays and is a place for students to share their poetry and get feedback on it, share and appreciate poems by others, and to support and encourage student participation in the Poetry Out Loud recitation contest.

Johnson's First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team is your opportunity to work with a group of students to create with technology.  Our team competes, cooperates, and challenges! You will learn about hardware, software, and will sharpen your engineering skills.  No previous knowledge is required, just a great attitude!

The team meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school in the Robotics Lab (next to Mr. Opitchka's and Ms. Vojtech's room

TRIO ETS is a college access program that is federally funded to provide services to first generation and low-income students. Students must be in 6th-12th grade and enrolled in our partner school to be eligible to enroll. Each year, students in our program are invited to participate in our program activities such as attending campus visits, educational workshops, and STEM-based field trips. Our participants also get a scholarship to access our tutoring service that offers support in over 200 subjects!
